Orthodontists suggests that all children should have an orthodontic examination by age 7. By this age, the (permanent) 6 year molars have usually erupted as well as some of the front permanent teeth. If these teeth have not yet begun to grow in then there may be a reason why and therefore, an examination is appropriate. Chestnut Dental Associates is unique because our pediatric dentists and orthodontists work side by side. As a result, our pediatric dentists can also provide early orthodontic evaluations and if necessary can either treat or refer to one of our orthodontists to treat or intercept early orthodontic problems.
Some early signs of dental and/or skeletal problems may include any of the following:
- severe crowding
- protrusive teeth
- constricted jaw
- impacted teeth
- difficulty chewing
- difficulty speaking
- inappropriate jaw growth
- poor biting relationships
Early detection and if needed, early treatment of these problems may provide some of the following benefits:
- decreased likelihood of extraction of permanent teeth
- decreased likelihood of impaction of teeth
- proper jaw development
- guidance of permanent tooth eruption
- increased confidence in social situations
Although an early phase of orthodontic treatment is not appropriate for all patients, all children benefit from an initial examination by age 7.
