A Children's Story Comes to Life

Rylie Toast Flat Stanley

This is a picture of Flat Stanley (who all kids know from school), Rylie (our Goldendoodle), and Toast (my daughter Aleeza’s hamster).

As you can see the dog and hamster are friends.  They spend time together every night.

Just the other day my wife woke me up early on a Friday morning, before the kids were up to get ready for school, telling me that Toast’s cage door was left open overnight and Toast was gone!  Anyone remember the children’s books about Humphrey the Hamster….it was happening in my home.  Toast was free to explore the house all night.  Unfortunately Rylie did not find her – she is a fantastic sleeper on my bed and is as hard to wake up in the morning as a teenager.  My wife and I not so calmly searched the house.  As I moved from room to room my flashlight eventually rested on either one of my daughter’s toys/stuffed animals or a cleverly disguised Toast, who was  covered in dust bunnies!!!  Instead of grabbing him I decided to have a conversation with him.  Unfortunately my wife scared him away and we had to lure him out of a closet.  Then she grabbed him and returned him home.  My daughter’s only response to the story when she awoke – it could not have been my fault the door was left open!  She is the only one who ever takes Toast out of his cage (her pet, her responsibility)  so if it was not her then this is just like the stories about Humphrey….he must open his cage at night, explore the house, do activities, and return home before we find out.  Except this time he was late and caught red handed.

Sincerely,
