This weekend we had the opportunity to spend an evening at a cookbook launch party for the new book “Double Awesome Chinese Food,” written by the Li siblings.  This amazing trio is the family that brought the Mei Mei food truck and restaurant to Boston.  Their casual brand of Chinese food brings together their roots as Chinese Americans, and as a family that grew up in Brookline.  Their goal is not only to bring us accessible delicious meals (think: scallion pancake egg sandwiches, and mind blowing kung pao chicken dip), but also to support local farmers and educate about food waste reduction.

The event included a chance to meet the chef, listen to her stories, and of course eat some Double Awesome Chinese food – if you are a fan of amazing food the book is worth picking up.

The evening ended with a seminar in making dumplings, which are arguably a perfect food.  In my house we have made lots of kinds of dumplings over the years.    My children love to eat them, and my 4 year old daughter is delighted to let me know “There is something in this noodle!” when she first takes a bite and is surprised to find the meal is not what she expected.  I love “project cooking,” and sitting down with a bowl of filling and a pile of wrappers waiting to be transformed into a special meal is always enjoyable.

 Bon Appetit!
