The Harsfield Family Rides The Rails

Harsfield Family edit

My wife and I are always trying to find something fun to entertain our family and keep the kids off of screens. While our daughter is pretty easy, our two teenage boys are hard to please!  We recently took a trip to Portsmouth, Rhode Island to a place called Rail Explorers.  These are pedal powered rail vehicles that are ridden on railroad tracks. We rented two to fit our family of five. We followed the Northern Ramble which is a route that was once part of the Old Colony Railroad. Along the route there were many cool things to see. One was the Green Animals Topiary Garden; we could see several animals made entirely of plants. Another cool sight was the Portsmouth Abbey School which was founded by Benedictine monks in 1918. An interesting fact is that both Senator Robert Kennedy and Senator Ted Kennedy went to the private school that opened here in 1926. We rode by the Bloody Brook which is the scene of a huge battle during the Revolutionary War where 400 soldiers died in battle. Next up was the Aquidneck Club which is a gorgeous private club built right on the water. My son enjoyed collecting golf balls that were on the side of the tracks. We rode under the Mount Hope Bridge and had a great photo opportunity that you can see here. The whole trip rode along Narragansett Bay. It was a lot of fun, great views and great exercise! Our whole family can’t wait to go back and do it again soon!
